Deadlines are scary.I know.
Eventually, Microsoft will even start disablingkey Windows 7 serviceslike Internet BackgammonandInternet Checkersthroughout the year.
Im being a little lighthearted about this, but Microsofts abandonment of Windows 7isa cause of concern for many.
Is it catastrophic if I dont upgrade now?
Thanks in advance for your help
Catastrophic?
Windows 7 will keep working come January 15.
Were I still using Windows 7, Id go the nuclear option.
That, or your system is too underpowered to run a VM.
(Ill likely write a guide for this next week, so stay tuned!)
Keep your router updated andmake it as secure as possible.
Dont usean administrator accountfor everyday tasks.
Switch back when done.
Use an antivirus that will still be updated after Windows 7’s end-of-life date.
(I recommendBitDefenders free version.)
Regularly scan your system witha free anti-malware utility.
Keep this utility updated.
Dont download files you were sent that you dont recognize.
Dont open files that your surfing app downloaded on your behalf.
Skip Internet Explorer and use a internet tool that has yourprivacyandsecurityin mind.
RunuBlock OriginanduBlock Origin Extra,Privacy Badger, andHTTPS Everywhereat minimum.
Usea third-party DNSto helpyou stay saferwhile youre browsing.
Run unknown apps in asandboxwhile you confirm theyre safe to use.
Back up your systemand its critical files right now.
Considerencryptingthe most important data you store on your system.
Keep your systems appsas updated as possible.
See if you canhack your way into getting free Windows 7 updatesfor a few more years.
Thats not to say that you should cling to Windows 7 forever.
