The answer is: Some, and in interesting ways.
al are actually good for teaching some basic skillsand great for keeping people interested in rocking out.
This isnt to say you cant learnanythingabout how to play guitar fromGuitar Hero.
Through repetition,Guitar Herocan help you internalize the beat in a way that practicing alone wont.
(Unless you religiously use a metronome, and we all know that no one does that.)
Keyboard
TheRock Bandkeyboard controller is a two-octave keytar-style keyboard.
This can lock you into bad musical habits that will be difficult to break later.
A lot of real keyboard parts dont either, to be fair.
Listening:Rock Banddoesnt let you hear what youre actually playing.
Play some parts too loud and other too soft?
Its not going to be audible.
Drums
In terms of transferable skills,Rock Banddrums are beginner-decent.
The controller consists of four drum heads and a pedal that plays the bass drum.
But does it teach you to play drums?
Those are the drum positives.
Here are the drum negatives.
Limb independence:Rock Banddrums require three limbs; real drums require four.
The game leaves out the foot you use for controlling your high-hat.
So its definitely useful, but not all you need.
So you could easily ingrain hard-to-break bad habits youll later have to un-learn.
Listening: Youreallyneed to hear yourself when you play drums.
Instead, it penalizes you for any kind of creativity.
More on that below.
(Shots fired, bassists!)
Overall,Rocksmithis great for beginners.
Beginners probably wouldnt make these adjustments, because it would make them sound worse.
Then theres the lag.
This is not good for playing in the real world.
Musical theory, practice, and technique are only tools for making the weird noises more interesting.
They arent really designed to teach music, though, and shouldnt be expected to.
(Actually learn to play in time is the most important music lesson of all.)
