A very peculiar feature of danxia landscape is the development of numerous caves of various sizes and shapes.
Danxia landforms rock walls and cliffs are formed of red sandstone and conglomerate.
Some 30 million years later a 3,700-meter-thick red-colored layer formed on the basin, known as the chalk bed.
During the next 30 million years orogenic movement has lifted the whole basin many times.
In 2010, six Danxia landscapes were inscribed as World Heritage Sites.
