Perhaps youre selling your MacBook Pro, or youre handing it over to a family member.

Or maybe your MacBook is old and slow, or its just stuck in a boot loop.

Erase Assistant will take care of everything for you.

Well walk you through both options below.

For this, youll need to be running macOS Monterey or higher.

And if youre running macOS Ventura or higher, the steps are slightly different.

Erase Assistant in macOS.

Before doing anything else, it’s important to back up your data.

If youre using macOS Monterey, select theAppleicon in the menu bar and chooseSystem Preferences.

Here, clickSystem Preferencesagain in the menu bar and chooseErase All Content and configs.

macOS Recovery on a MacBook.

If youre using macOS Ventura or later, youll need to use the System configs app.

Click theAppleicon in the menu bar and chooseSystem tweaks.

From the sidebar, go toGeneral, and from the right-hand section, chooseTransfer or Reset.

Choose Disk Utility in macOS Recovery.

Here, selectErase All Content and parameters.

Then enter with your account password.

This will open up the Erase Assistant in a new window.

Here, choose your main administrator account (if you have more than one).

ClickContinueand watch as macOS shuts down all open apps, restarts, and wipes your Mac clean.

This is also the way to reset an Apple Silicon Mac that is not booting up.

First, we need to enter macOS Recovery.

Here, selectOptionsto open macOS Recovery.

Release the keys and your Mac will boot into Recovery mode.

If your setup is frozen, try holding theControl+Command+Powerbutton.

This will pop fire up macOS Recovery login screen.

Here, choose the user with administrator rights, and enter the account password.

Now that youre in macOS Recovery, chooseDisk Utilityand opt for disk volume that you want to erase.

Then, select Macintosh HD and hit the Erase button from the top toolbar.

A new dialog box will ask for the drives name and formatting.

SelectErase Volume Group(orEraseif that button isn’t shown) to wipe the drive clean.

Next, go toDisk Utility>Quit Disk Utilityto go back to the macOS Recovery screen.

Your Mac is now blank.
