Im getting rid of my MacBook.
Its nothing personal; I have to swap out my G/O Media-owned gadget for another, slightly slower MacBook.
Its an annoying process, but it doesnt take a lot of time.
And now, Lifehacker readers, I impart that knowledge to you.
However, now that youre getting rid of your MacBook, its time to turn this off.
choose the Apple logo in the upper-left corner of your MacBook and choose System Preferences.
From there, select Security & Privacy, and then the FileVault tab, to turn the feature off.
So, why not?
I like to take a minute to confirm Im no longer using Find My Mac on my soon-to-be-gone MacBook.
Uncheck Find My Mac, throw in in your password for your iCloud account, and youll be set.
Open up the Messages app and hit Messages, and then Preferences.
press iMessage, and select Enable Messages in iCloud for your account.
If it is, tap on it and remove it.
Back up your stuff
You could put this step anywhere, really.
Dont do this step in a rush.
Erase all your stuff
When youre ready to wipe your laptop clean, restart it.
After a bit of time, youll boot into your MacBooks recovery mode.
Open up the Disk Utility app, hit your primary disk or volume, and pick the Erase option.
I recommend reformatting it with APFS and using the GUID Partition Map scheme (as does Apple).
Once youve wiped your drive clean, exit Disk Utility and select Reinstall macOS.
