Digit has been an awesome tool forfinding extra money in your budget and automatically saving that money.
However, they recently decided to start charging customers a monthly subscription fee of $2.99.
How Digit Is Changing
We werebig fans of Digitwhen they first launched.
Its theperfect tool for lazy saversor anyone looking to squeeze more savings out of their budget.
Unfortunately, youll now have to pay to use the service.
To their credit, it couldnt have been an easy decision.
To be totally candid, thats something we still need to figure out, said Bloch at the time.
Existing users will get a 100-day grace period.
New Features
So what do you get for your money?
Well, theyve also updated their annual savings bonus from 0.2% to 1%.
Put more simply, you basically get a 0.25% return every three months.
According to Forbes, the average Digit user saves between $80 and $170 a month.
Want to save for a down payment on a car?
Text them a car emoji.
I love emojis as much as the next person, but this isnt exactly groundbreaking.
So its not likely that many folks will find the $2.99 subscription worth it.
Sure, Digit helps you save, but whats the point in saving if it costs money?
If thats you, you might be wondering how to cancel your account.
Justhead to this linkand put in your login credentials.
Other tools are a lot more hands-on.
It works like a virtual coin jar.
Went to the gym?
Tip yourself a buck.
Or maybe you resisted the temptation to spend $10 on lunch and brought food from home instead.
You couldactuallysave that money in your Tip Yourself account.
We always want to make rewarding yourself with a tip as easy as possible.
Our vision for automation in the future would be automatic tips based on some other action.
For example, got 10,000 steps, checked into the gym, etc.
In the meantime, though, the best part about the app is that its free.
According to their site, There shouldnt be a cost to saving money.
Thats our position and we are sticking to it.
Its onlyavailable on iOSfor now, but an Android version is in the works.
Like any other reputable bank account, the money you save in your Tip Yourself accountis FDIC-insured.
Qapital is a bit more complicated than Tip Yourself, though.
It uses automation, but you create your own rules for saving.
you’re free to even create a keep the change rule.
There are a couple of caveats here, though.
First, Acorns is not a retirement account.
Second, Acorns isnt exactly free, but their fee is still better than Digits.
Theres a flat monthly fee of $1 for accounts with a balance under $5,000.
For accounts over that amount, the fee is reduced to 0.25% per year.
Theres also an annual .25-.5% deduction on total investment.
While Acorns isnt free, either, its still a better deal than Digit.
Its a shame that Digit is no longer free because theyre a great tool for saving.
