That means knowing a little bit of their language and striking up a conversation.

Make an earnest effort to communicate with them and show that you mean no harm.

But at the same time, if theyre not interested in speaking with you, dont push it.

Avoid taking part inslum or poverty tourism, or anything else that may exploit the local population.

Either way, people will appreciate the fact that you asked.

If they say no, respect it, leave them alone and move on.

Also, if in doubt, dont take the photo.

Its better to err on the side of caution than potentially upset someone.

If theyre not into it, say thank you anyway, and move along.

They are already doing you a favor by being your model, so respect their time.

You want to be able to ask them and go right into it so theres no lag time.
