Movie-theater subscription service Sinemia just announced a new unlimited plan for $15/month.
But theres still a catch.
Whenever Lifehacker writes about Sinemia, readers tell us about the frustrations that theyve had.
Heresreader Paul Earlyin November:
BEWARE.
No ability to refuse the new fees or cancel and get a refund for unused months.
What looks like a good deal on the outside has quickly grown into a thorn-in-our-side experience.
There was to be a physical card delivered but that never happened.
Im afraid there is only going to be more TOS and fee changes from here on out.
I live in the middle of nowhere and our country bumpkin theater does not have the capacity for cardless.
I complained to Sinemia and got a sucks to be you response.
Now the card is coming back and it costs?
This feels a lot like a scam.
The biggest problem is getting in touch with someone at Sinemia.
It is a hell onto itself.
The best and only route I have gotten a response from is Facebook Messenger.
Even then, they only respond every 24-48 hours at best.
The longest response has taken almost a week.
Their customer service is practically non-existent, so theres really no one to complain to.
Readeri hate coming up with user namessays:
I definitely regret my annual plan with them.
At least if you go with month-to-month it’s possible for you to cancel at any time.
Sinemia refuses to give refunds, even when the problems are on their end.
And when I finally cancelled my account (I just dont see that many movies!
), I wasnt one of the many people who got quietly uncancelled and charged again.
MoviePass worked well for me, despite their best efforts.
So if you have the right kind of movie theater habits, maybe youll come out ahead with Sinemia.
Thats the risk you take if you use a theater subscription service.
Maybe consider subscribing to a specific chainor a local artsy theaterinstead.
Or watch more Netflix, before all their movies disappear.
I guess maybe we should just pay for things.
