For years youve been saying youre going to scan all the photos you have in shoeboxes in the basement.

Nows as good a time as any.

The Contenders

BothPhotoScanandPhotomynehave one main purpose: Scan and digitize your paper photos.

Theyre both available on Android and iPhone.

These four images are combined together to cut out glare and improve picture quality.

PhotoScan also automatically finds the edges of each photo and crops your pictures accordingly.

So, well stick tothe $4.99 version instead.

Photomyne integrates with an optional paid subscription to Photomynes cloud storage ($2/month).

Like PhotoScan, you dont actually need to use that cloud storage if you dont want to though.

With that, lets dig into what its like to actually use these apps.

Photomynes workflow is made for quickly going through a ton of photos.

This is considerably faster than PhotoScans workflow.

These are then combined into one image.

If youre scanning a lot of photos, this is a much more cumbersome experience.

Photomynes album creation tool makes organizing photos as you go easy.

If you export photos to your camera roll, they dont keep the album data.

PhotoScan doesnt have any of this photo management stuff in the app at all.

Thats all regulated toGoogle Photosor whatever other third-party photo organization tool youre using.

PhotoScan also eliminates glare and reflections, which is handy when your photos are all glossy.

For its part, Photomyne doesnt do a terrible amount of work in post production.

Both apps automatically crop the digitized images, eliminating whatevers in the background, which leaves just the photograph.

I had to do this in PhotoScan too, but not nearly as often.

Photomyne also nags you a lot to sign up for their cloud service.

Photomyne is a more feature-rich app though.

Photomynes more of a one-stop shop, whereas PhotoScan is just a scanning tool.

Which works best for you is dependent on how youre archiving your digital photos right now.

If its just scanning you want and you dont mind taking your time doing it, use PhotoScan.

If youre in a rush or you want a full photo management tool, go with Photomyne.
