The conveniences of working at home are also its curses.
To get some structure in your work-from-home life, you oughta create your own routines.
Order in lunch, fire up Slack, and plan your afternoon shower.
ItsWork From Home Week!
Here are some ways to accomplish one or both of those:
Get dressed.
Look, you donthave to, but its an option.
Ruminate.Set aside time tomeditatein the morning, or writemorning pages, or add an entry to yourgratitude journal.
Give yourself a commute.
Walk around the block and right back into your front door.
I take my kids to daycare every morning.
Morning is a great time to exercise.
Plan a Change of Scenery
Sitting in the same house all day long gets really dull.
If you have a hard time focusing, its not (just) because youre lazy!
Distractions at work tend to give you a break while still keeping you more or less focused on work.
Think of talking to a co-worker.
Thats hardly a break when the rest of your work is typing into, say, a spreadsheet.
Try these midday changes of scenery instead:
Go for that run.
Perhaps you skipped it this morning but now is a good time too!
Or just do a few push-ups on your living room floor.
Check the mail.Ahuman beinghas broughtthingsto your very home!
And you must leave the house, or at least the room, to find out what they are.
(Thanks toMegan Johnson on Twitterfor reminding me of this joy.)
For freelancers, this carries an extra thrill, because sometimes those things include checks.
Get dressed, if you didnt already.
Go to a cafe.
Or if youve been at a cafe, try switching cafes!
Or even going home.
Which brings us to…
Take a real lunch break.
Like,not at your desk.
Or better yet, go outside for a mini picnic.
Forces me to take a break from staring at my screen all the time.
Plan to check in with your family or friends.
I know my kids will be waiting for me.
Partners, roommates, or friends can also play this role.
I wrap up what Im doing, and plan the next day.
