The terraces were almost completely destroyed, along with several villages that were buried in mud.
One of these villages, Te Wairoa, with its half-buried houses is now a tourist attraction.
This continued for several generations of the Smith family until about a third of the village was excavated.
The vast collection artifacts that they had unearthed is currently on display in a museum at the site.
