Every year, theConsumer Electronics Showhosts dozens of tech companies showing off their latest creations.
Heres what you’re free to expect in 2017 based on what we saw from CES.
This year at CES, the gloves came off.
Google and Amazon are racing to integrate their smart assistants with every gadget in your life.
So far, Amazon is winning.
Google showed off a smaller version of the same game plan.
All of this points to one very push in 2017: Smart assistants will beeverywhere.
Just speak out loud and they can help you with everything you oughta do.
Its an ambitious plan, but it probably has a long way to go before its reality yet.
HDR offers a better overall picture, a wider range of colors, and higher contrast than typical sets.
This year, TV manufacturers switched their hype machines from 4K to HDR.
LG, for example, announceda new lineup of TVsthat will include support for allfourflavors of HDR.
If you read that and thought There arefourHDR formats?
the answer is yes, but dont panic.
Most TVs support one of the two main specsHDR10andDolby Visionand both are great upgrades over regular 4K video.
Luckily, TVs can support multiple formats at once.
LGsnew W7 model, nicknamed the Wallpaper TVis about a tenth of an inch thick.
It stores most of its electronics in a sound bar beneath the TV.
Vues DVR feature was extremely limited and Sling didnt have DVR at all.
Channel selection was scattered, many channels lacked on-demand video, and you couldnt pause some of them.
Fortunately, things are getting better.
At CES this year,Hulu demoed their own live streaming service, which includes a built-in cloud DVR.
Hulu already streams new episodes of many web link shows.
The service offersup to 120 channels of live internet-based TV.
More importantly, DirecTV plans to add DVR functionality this year.
Meanwhile, Sling isalready beta testing its DVR program, andPlaystation Vue has its own DVR feature.
Windows users can play games that their computers arent powerful enough to handle.
Mac users can play games that are Windows-exclusive.
Its a great option for everyone.
Of course, that comes at a price.
GeForce Now will cost $25 for 20 hours on the 1060 or 10 hours on the 1080.
You also have to bring your own game library.
This is much different from how GeForce Now works on the SHIELD TV.
Its also a parade of some of the oddest or most eclectic ideas weve ever seen.
This year, the tradition of inexplicable or niche gadgets shows no sign of slowing.
Keep in mind that refrigeratorsshould last around 15 years.
Your toast will still probably burn, but at least youll have data to explain why.
