Theyre the soldiers with scissors, the deities of dying, and the architects of amazing dos.
Heres what they said.
This includes the cut, the color, and the styling.
Hair stylist Austin Knight agrees:
BRING PICTURES then BRING MORE PICTURES.
Ker also suggests you read up on what hair and styling terms actually mean:
Articulation is key.
Have a clear sense of what you are trying to convey to your hairdresser.
Take the time to research terms and references as best as you might.
All services are not created equal highlights are different than color or balayage.
A whole new style is different than a trim.
You booked an appointment in advance, hey put in a bit of forethought.
This also applies to color and styling.
Everyone has different face shapes, skin tones, and complexions.
You might need multiple appointments, or you might need to book a huge chunk of time.
It can take multiple processes or days.
Trust me, I teach hairstylists and sometimes even THEY dont comprehend that.
Hair texture, length, and thickness all play a part in the finished product.
Clean Your Hair Before You Come In
Clean yourself, people.
We dont wanna touch or smell that.
Ker complained about the same thing to me as I sat there wondering if I was clean enough.
There is nothing more disgusting than having to style greasy, dirty hair.
Hold Still!
Youre an adult, not a fidgety four-year-old.
Sit still, says professional stylist Steve Hernandez.
Not too mention my fingers.
Hold still, like!
I did hair before the internet and have invented a lot of styles just from pure imagination.
Personally, I shut down like a crashing computer.
If you do not trust them, do not book with them.
After all, as Garcia puts it, youre really booking time foryourselfwhen you make an appointment.
take a stab at enjoy it and dont rush the person holding sharp objects near your head.
And like be considerate of the long hours stylists usually have to work to make it make ends meet.
However, almost every day, one minute before closing, someone wants us to squeeze in one more.
Then we stay late and that little trim ends up being an entire new look.
Yeah, dont do that.
Hair stylists work constant, long hours to make a living.
And even then, its not a great living, explains Knight:
We dont make hella dough.
Unless your stylist is REALLY killin it, they probably arent banking like you think.
We have a bottom line to meet and expensive tools to buy.
Education aint cheap either.
We arent just pocketing your payments for ourselves.
When prices go up, Knight clarifies, its because the cost of their operation has gone up.
Also, prices going up is the only way for stylists to get a raise.
They deserve raises for their hard work just as much as you do.
That means missing or cancelling appointments last minute is a big pain in our ass.
Oh, and you should definitely tip your stylist, even if the cut was expensive:
Tips matter!
Salon owners routinely take 50% commission (often more!)
off the top of all services.
Tips help with all of that!
My advice: always tip the people in charge of how you lookvery well.
$2 is not a tip and $1 is an insult.
Hair stylists want to help you, so help them do that.
Knight likens it to chatting with your doctor:
Talk to us.
We cant give you what you want if you dont tell us.
Its just like the doctor.
If you dont tell them whats going on with your hair, there can be some serious ramifications.
Dont hold anything back, even if youre embarrassed.
And be prepared to talk about your hair routine.
Im not going to promise them something I cant deliverthats very important!
You dont ever want a dissatisfied client to leave the salon.
Its all about them, nobody else matters at that time.
I truly believe that honesty is the best policy.
Thats not easy no matter who you are.
hey dont be a jerk.
We really do want to like you.
Dont make it hard.
But it doesnt matter, you leave everything at the door when you walk in the salon that morning.
If it feels like everyone else is the problem, its probably you who are the problem.
