President Trumpreleased a new draft budget yesterdaywhich means that your federal tax dollarsmaybe going to different places.

Where the Government Gets Its Money

About half of the federal governments moneycomes from income taxes.

You also probably pay state and local taxes of various kinds, but were not calculating those today.

Another 33 percent comes from payroll taxesmore about those in a minute.

How Much Do I, Personally, Pay?

A portion of each of your paychecks go to payroll taxes.

Only about half of these come out of your salary; your employer pays the other half.

(If youre self employed, you pay it all yourself anyway.)

Heres where your payroll taxes go.

$1,450 toMedicare, which provides health insurance for people over 65.

$420 to unemployment insurance.

Next, lets consider your income tax.

If you have last years tax return handy, just take a look: thats what you pay.

Thats$4,061in income tax for a typical Jane Taxpayer and her family.

What Do I Get for My Money?

This years budget is$3.65 trillion dollars.

So were looking at about $2 trillion of other things the federal government pays for.

Jane pays:

$706 to Medicaid($348 billion).

Trumps proposed budget involvesmassive cuts to Medicaid, but its hard to pin down the dollar amount.

In ten years, its budget could be halved.

$144 to SNAP, the program formerly known as food stamps ($70.9 billion).

Over the next decade, a quarter of the programs budgetcould be cut.

The Congressional Budget Office has asnazzy chart hereshowing whats included and how it changed from 2015 to 2016.

Heres some of what is included:

$1,185 for defense($584 billionin 2016).

Trump wants toincrease spending here, costing you an extra $107.

Cuttingone third of foreign aid dollarswould save you $14.

Trump wants tocut this down to $26 billion, saving you $12.

$38 for NASA($19 billion).

Trumps budget keeps thisroughly the same.

$16 for the Environmental Protection Agency($8 billion).

Trumpwants to cutthe EPAs budget down to $5.7 billion, which saves you almost exactly five bucks.

30 cents for the National Endowment for the Arts($148 million).

Trumpdoesnt want your 30 cents.

Think of smaller programs as 20 cents for every $100 million.
