The current villain (or hero?
), the Graham-Cassidy bill, is gaining steam and may have a chance of passing.
Heres whats in it.
How Many People Would Lose Coverage?
The Commonwealth Fund estimates that32 million people could lose coverage by 2027.
Well, there wont be one.
What Happens to Medicaid?
30 states did so, and received money from the federal government to pay for the expansion.
(Block grant is always a code word for cuts, by the way.)
They would also be distributed unequally, with more rural statesmostly red states that didnotexpand Medicaidgetting a larger share.
Blue states lose majorly in this scenario, and red states win a little.
Heres the upshot,via Vox:
The bill offered by Republican Sens.
It eliminates an expansion of the Medicaid program that covers millions of Americans in favor of block grants.
The Kaiser Family Foundationhas more detail on this.
What Happens to People With Pre-Existing Conditions?
Will Insurance Plans Still Cover Everything?
Again, this depends on whether your state requests a waiver.
If it does, itcould eliminate any or all of the essential health benefitsthat the ACA requires.
Will My Insurance Cost More?
If you get it from the exchanges, yesthe bill eliminates subsidies for premiums and cost sharing.
If you get it anywhere else, then it all depends.
Without minimum benefits from insurance plans, you might be able to getcheap insurance that is mostly useless.
But with higher premiums for preexisting conditions, your insurance might be more expensive.
Even if this bill fails, and the ACA remains in effect, premiums are still going up.
What Are the Fun Surprises In This Bill?
Because every large bill has some fun surprises!
This one states that qualified health plansmay not cover abortion care.
I Have Opinions About This.
Who Should I Call?
First, your senators, because the bill is currently in the Senate.
These are the senators that currently look like swing votes.
If your senators do not include these people, dont call them.
Its not only a waste of your time, it stops their actual constituents from getting through.
If you dont do phones, thats fine.
