In 2018, 20th Century Fox released the film adaptation of author Angie Thomas young adult coming-of-age novelThe Hate U Give.Despite the books massive popularityit sat at number one on the New York Times bestseller list for nearly a full yearthe film version barely managed to outgross its $23 million budget.
Coupled with the current state of the post-pandemic theatrical market, its doubly unsurprising that the movie based on Thomas followup novel,On the Come Up, is headed straight to streaming.
Arriving on Sept. 23, the film follows Bri (Jamila C. Gray), a 16-year-old aspiring rapper and daughter of a hip-hop legend doing her best to live up to his legacy.
Originally set to be shepherded byThe Hate U Givedirector George Tillman, Jr., it was ultimately brought to the small screen by actress Sanaa Lathan, making her directorial debut.
