What is the Equality Act?
Currently, there are no explicit federal laws protecting LGBTQ individuals from discrimination.
There is alsono explicit federal lawbarring discrimination of women in public businesses.
For the very first time,womenwillalsobe protected from discrimination in public accommodations under the Equality Act.
What are critics saying?
Some critics argue that an act protecting women will actuallyinfringeupon the rights of women.
Accordingly, opponents argue that it would force women to share restrooms with men.
Other Republicans argue issues of inequality as it relates to sports.
Unsurprisingly, other conservatives oppose the idea as it relates to religious beliefs.
And someconservative outletsare just full of assholes.
What does Trump think about the Equality Act?
In a statement toWashington Blade, a senior administration official has said Trump opposes the Equality Act.
Will it pass?
With a Republican majority in the Senate, its expected that it wont even enter a vote.
(The bill has also died twice in committee before it was finally reintroduced this past March.)
Having the backing of the entire party, as well as eight Republicans, is a first.
